Il est d’abord évident qu’un rapport peut être effectué par leurs apparences ; les artistes ont ici tous les deux choisis de représenter des animaux, plus ou moins marins selon le titre donné par Huang Yong Ping, mais par leurs squelettes et non leurs formes complète. Des représentations donc de la mort mais avec des mouvements de ces sculptures qui rappellent malgré tout la vie. Notamment avec la gueule du serpent d’océan et la position de son corps, qui nous donne l’impression d’un mouvement dynamique. Ce qui permet de questionner le spectateur sur sa propre finitude.
En imitant le réel, comme le fait Huang Yong Ping, bien que cette sculpture soit monumentale, ce qui vient briser certaines facettes réalistes du projet, en exagérant les dimensions du serpent. Tandis que Mobile Matrix expose de vrais ossements de baleine grise, que l’artiste a récupéré lui-même en Californie dans le parc National de Baja. Le rapport au réel est donc ici plus que présent, c’est le réel en lui-même qui est exposé par Gabriel Orozco. Ou du moins ce qu’il en reste, ce qui nous amène à nouveau aux questions que provoque la mort.
Bien que ces deux sculptures monumentales, soient également toutes les deux en ronde bosse, in situ, et présentent des sujets similaires, les matériaux employés sont bien différents. D’un côté, le squelette de Huang Yong Ping a été réalisé par fonte d’aluminium avec une longueur de 128m et une hauteur de 3m, constitué de 284 vertèbres, fixée sur pieux en inox. Alors que celui de Gabriel Orozco, de dimensions 196x1089x266 cm, provient de réels ossements récupérés avec les conseils du directeur du musée d’histoire naturelle du Mexique. Puis numérotés, transportés et réassemblés avec armature métallique, et l’utilisation de la mine de plomb sur les os. Comme l’artiste l’avait déjà fait avec son œuvre Black Knites, mais sur un crâne humain. TBPour ce qui est de leur dispositif de présentation, Mobile Matrix expose la baleine en hauteur, suspendue au plafond du bâtiment, faisant d’elle une œuvre monumentale en ronde-bosse et permettant donc aux spectateurs de l’observer en détails par leurs déplacements. Tout comme pour serpent d’Océan étant également une œuvre monumentale en ronde-bosse, exposée sur l’estran à Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, de manière que la gueule du serpent se situe à la limite de la marée haute, et que l’extrémité de la queue du serpent se trouve à la limite de la marée basse. L’exposition de l’œuvre dépend donc en partie de la nature, mais sont exposition en milieu naturel exprime le désir de se séparer du sentiment que certains artistes ont d’être sanctuarisés, alors que Gabriel Orozco laisse son œuvre dans un milieu plus restreint ce qui nous montre différentes façons de penser chez ces deux artistes.Ces deux œuvres ont d’une manière étaient réalisées en collaborations. Pour Serpent d’Océan, d’une part car une collaboration entre les artistes, scientifiques et autres est obligatoire pour un tel projet, mais également par son processus de création, le prototype ayant était créé en France mais fabriqué en Chine avant de revenir en France pour être exposé à Nantes. Alors que pour Mobile Matrix, la collaboration se fait entre l’artiste et les architectes de la bibliothèque où a été exposée l’œuvre, entre l’artiste et le musée d’histoire naturelle de Mexico, par les recherches en équipe des ossements, ou encore par les interventions de scientifiques pour le maintien des ossements.
Enfin, ces deux œuvres ont un rapport avec le sujet « art, science et technologie : dialogue ou hybridation ». Pour Mobile Matrix, le rapport avec la science peut être souligné d’une part par la nécessité d’injection de matériel plastique pour maintenir les os. Ou encore lorsqu’après s’être rendu compte que la « main » (l’artiste précise dans une interview que les baleines ont des doigts) gauche de la baleine était en mauvais état, ils aient du la remplacée en reproduisant une copie de la main droite de la baleine. Ou simplement encore par les recherches de la constitution des ossements de cette baleine, ou encore par les machines précises employées pour exposer celle-ci. Alors que pour Serpent d’Océan cette collaboration avec la science s’est principalement faite lors de la création du prototype, ainsi que pour la modélisation et l’impression 3D de celui-ci. Dans ces deux cas on peut donc affirmer que l’art s’allie à la science pour donner le résultat de ces œuvres.
